Asshole of the Night

Goes to Chris Simon. You suck buddy! What you did to Ryan Hollweg was bush league. And if the league has any guts, you’ll be suspended a long time for that reckless stick swing across Hollweg’s face dangerously close to his neck. Disgusting! If you thought what Neil or Janssen did was bad, this was an utter disgrace.

And I’m so glad what that idiot did cost his team in what was another gutwrenching game between the two bitter rivals as the Rangers made a big statement by coming from a goal down to win 2-1 at Nassau Coliseum. Michael Nylander setup Petr Prucha’s power play winner on Simon’s major penalty (attempt to injure and end Hollweg’s career). But he didn’t succeed! Hollweg somehow got up after it and didn’t have to leave the bench. No.44 was really lucky. And good too because the hit he threw on Simon was a clean shoulder. Simon went to play the puck and didn’t take a vicious check. But after taking it, he clearly lost his brain and pulled one of the most gutless acts ever. It’s really amazing Hollweg was okay. What a tough son of a gun!

So, even after Prucha scored his 17th with 5:14 remaining, I knew it wouldn’t come easy for this team to sweep the Fishsticks and vault over Toronto (who lost in Ottawa) and idle Carolina into eighth in the East. And when Michal Rozsival was called for a hook, it gave the Islanders a huge chance to tie. They didn’t capitalize on their abbreviated man-advantage but with Rick DiPietro pulled for an extra attacker, the Isles came about as close to tying it as possible. I wish I had a picture of it because after Mike Sillinger won the faceoff with under 30 ticks left, it looked like they scored. As the puck was going over the line though, a sprawling Henrik Lundqvist got his stick on it at the last possible moment to pull it out forcing a six minute review. It was eerily similar to Tampa-Calgary Game 6 three years ago when the Flames believed they went ahead with under 9:00 left. But replays were inconclusive on Nikolai Khabibulin’s stack of the pads which allowed Martin St. Louis to be the OT hero and force a Game 7 which Tampa took 2-1 to win the Stanley Cup.

In any event, Lundqvist kept it out and then there was one more nervous moment where he was out of position and Jason Blake had what looked like an open net. But before he could get to it and force OT, Rozsival saved the day and poked it away and then Lundqvist danced a jig. Hilarious stuff. But I did the same thing as well. 🙂

Great win! Now on to Pittsburgh Saturday.

So…

I guess it’s OK that Colby Armstrong elbowed Luko because he only lost a couple teeth?

Let’s compare folks, shall we?

Cam on Kaberle – shoulder up high while Kaberle was admiring a pass. He falls into the boards, hits head. Goes to hospital, but plans to play before season’s end. No penalty, 3 Game Suspension.

Armstrong on Luko – Elbow to Luko’s face while he was coming in for a hip check. Luko goes down, bleeds, loses teeth. No penalty, probably no suspension.

Tell ya who will be suspended though, Chris Simon.

I have a feeling Derek will need quite a long spell to compose his thoughts on Nolan’s boy Simon.

Anyway, Devil reinstate Devils Hockey, minus a bullshit giveaway from Gomer and some awful goaltending by Marty on 1 play. THE CAPTAIN finally pulls it out in the skills competition, Devils take it 4-3 and extend their lead to 8 on Pittsburgh.

Rangers Lose Hossa To Injury

During Monday’s 2-1 shootout victory over the Islanders, the Rangers lost forward Marcel Hossa to a sprained left MCL leaving the game after the second period. The 25 year-old Slovakian is expected to miss three to four weeks. It’s too bad for the Blueshirts because he was playing his best hockey of his career.

After struggling to score in the first half, the left wing flourished when put on the top line with Martin Straka and Jaromir Jagr, erupting for eight goals and 13 points in the past 15 contests. The eight goals are a team high since the All Star break. Up to that point, he had just two goals and five points for the season playing mostly 11-12 minutes a night on the third line and PK unit.

In 64 games,Hossa has 10 goals and eight assists for 18 points. Ironically, the 10 goals matched a career best established last season in the same amount of games in his first year on Broadway. The eight helpers and 18 points were new career highs. Aside from his recent solid play, he also was a shootout hero winning three for the club this season including a forehand deke which provided a huge comeback victory over St. Louis this past Saturday. If the team winds up making it, that could be the one that springboarded them in the right direction.

Now, the Blueshirts will have to replace one of its most effective forwards at a time when they’re pushing for the playoffs in a wild race for the final spot.

Also banged up in Monday’s win was recently acquired defenseman Paul Mara, who suffered a shoulder injury. It looks like he might be out for tomorrow’s rematch at Nassau Coliseum.

Due to the injuries, the Rangers recalled forward Brandon Dubinsky and defenseman David Liffiton from Hartford on an emergency basis. In 58 games, the 20 year-old Dubinsky has 30 points (14-16-30) and 87 penalty minutes in his first pro season with the Wolf Pack. Meanwhile, 22 year-old Liffiton has a goal and nine assists along with 150 penalty minutes this season. Both will probably be asked to step in tomorrow night in a big rivalry game and contribute. With Straka still nursing a bad shoulder which prevents him from shooting, the Rangers need everyone to play big.

According to Coach Tom Renney, he did give consideration to resurgent prospect Hugh Jessiman. After struggling to establish himself in his second season at Hartford, the former 2003 first round pick went down to Charlotte to regain his scoring touch. It seems to have worked. Since being recalled, he’s scored five goals and had 18 PIM in six games, also notching a shootout winner in sparking the Pack to some recent wins. The former Dartmouth product is beginning to grow more confident on the ice. But it was probably the right decision to leave him down. It would’ve been a huge rush job smacking of PR had they given Jessiman the call. Let him continue to prove himself in the ‘A’ first.

Noteworthy

Two interesting things coming out of today’s NHL that’s emailed daily.

HE SAID IT
“Of course, he’s the best ever. But you know what I like best about him, at 35 years old? The passion for the game that he still has.” – Flyers goaltending great Bernie Parent, on the Devils’ Martin Brodeur.

Interesting choice of words from the ex-Flyer who led them to back-to-back Cups. Again, there’s no definitive way you can really conclude that without trying to compare what the goalies who played in other eras had to deal with. I still say today’s game has much better team oriented defense. Players are more schooled in backchecking and aren’t afraid to get in the path of shots. Goalies have better equipment and are much better coached. You watch the old highlight films and you would frequently see goalies have no chance on hard shots from 20 feet out. There was a lot more net for shooters to work with. Now, goalies can cover much of it and make it very difficult. I have a hard time putting Brodeur over Terry Sawchuk, Ken Dryden and Patrick Roy. Less we forget that his boyhood idol won Cups in three different decades and had to play in the high scoring 80’s when the game was more back and forth. All that said, by the time his brilliant Hall of Fame career concludes, Brodeur will have shattered almost every record with one team, making it a good argument.

And now for item two:

From Elias: Jordan Staal’s shorthanded goal spurred the Penguins’ third-period comeback from a 4-1 deficit and Pittsburgh went on to a 5-4 shootout victory in Ottawa. Staal’s goal was his seventh short-handed goal of the season — the most by any rookie in NHL history. The old record of six was shared by Gerry Minor (with Vancouver in 1980-81) and John Madden (with New Jersey in 1999-2000).

The last time that the Penguins earned a road win after overcoming a third-period deficit of three or more goals was on Oct. 15, 1991, when they overcame a 6-2 Islanders’ lead to take a 7-6 decision in overtime on Long Island. (Mario Lemieux had two goals during that comeback, while Mark Recchi, Jaromir Jagr and Phil Bourque added the others.)

There’s little doubt that what Staal has accomplished here is pretty remarkable. It’s very difficult for any player selected in June to enter the league at the age of 18 and make an immediate impact unless your name is Mario or Crosby. The Pens weren’t even sure they’d keep the former second overall selection up with the club. But he worked his way up the ladder from fourth line penalty killing duty to a top six forward who can be trusted in any game situation. If you’ve seen his rookie record seven shorthanded goals on the highlight reel, then you know how special they’ve been. This guy has supreme skill to go with great defensive instincts and breakaway speed. I still marvel at the great patience he showed to beat the Leafs in OT last month to complete his first career hat trick. That kind of poise is rare for a player that age. There’s no question that Staal will be a very special player. It’s amazing to think he might not even get nominated for the Calder. But with teammate Evgeni Malkin, Colorado’s Paul Stastny and the Kings’ Anze Kopitar all in the running, it’s a distinct possibility. I still say Staal belongs in the top three. Regardless, he’s going to get to 30 goals this season and might even challenge 10 shorthanders before it ends. What an exciting player!

Eastern Race Update

The Devils dropped their third straight at Philadelphia 5-4 in overtime. Meaning that yes, the Flyers actually discovered a way to beat their Turnpike rivals. After Flyer killer Brad Lukowich forced OT, Simon Gagne won it 1:47 in with his 36th to send New Jersey to another loss.

On a night when the Penguins restarted their chase for the division by coming back from three down to post a miraculous 5-4 shootout win at heartless Ottawa (Sid the Kid won it with a nifty backhand top shelf), the good news for the Devs is that at least in two of their three defeats, they got a point. That puts them up to 88, still seven better than ther Pens. With games against them in two of the next three, it will probably decide what happens.

In other key Eastern action, the Leafs shutout the hapless Capitals 3-0. Andrew Raycroft stopped all 24 and Darcy Tucker scored his 20th around Yanic Perreault and Alexei Ponikarovsky to help give Toronto the win, tying Carolina with 73 points. But due to having one less game played, the Leafs vaulted into the eighth spot.

Meanwhile, the Bruins had a costly defeat at home to Colorado, being blanked at The Fleet Center 2-0. That leaves them with 69 points.

The Thrashers got goals from Marian Hossa, Ilya Kovalchuk and two from recently acquired Keith Tkachuk to post a 4-2 home win over Florida. The win gave Atlanta 80 points and lifted them two points ahead of Tampa Bay. The Lightning were trailing Vancouver 4-1 in the second at last check. So the Thrashers could very well be in first in the Southeast by the end of the night.

Here is the current Eastern playoff race:

*1.Sabres 93 pts 17 GR
*2.Devils 88 pts 15 GR
*3.Atlanta 80 pts 14 GR
4.Ottawa 82 pts 15 GR
5.Pens 81 pts 16 GR
6.Tampa 78 pts 14 GR
7.Isles 76 pts 16 GR
8.Toronto 73 pts 15 GR
9.Carolina 73 pts 14 GR
10.Habs 72 pts 14 GR
11.NYR 71 pts 16 GR
12.Bruins 69 pts 16 GR
13.Florida 67 pts 15 GR

Rangers Get Off Deck Against Archrivals

Big win tonight. It definitely was one of the better regular season games I’ve seen. Lots of energy at the Garden and plenty on the line. For the Rangers, no matter how brilliant Rick DiPietro was, they had to get the two points. And tonight, despite Jason Blake’s 33rd off a skate in a period the Blueshirts owned, they never got down and kept coming. The physicality and determination eventually paid dividends when Petr Prucha put home Jed Ortmeyer’s rebound 26 seconds into the third.

From there, they nearly went ahead with an unbelievably dominant shift. For roughly two minutes, they pinned the Islanders in their end and generated chance after chance. So much so that they hit three posts and forced DiPietro to make some tough stops. But the Islander company man was up to the challenge on his way to finishing with an Islander franchise record 56 saves.

After all the hard work the Rangers had put in, they nearly let it slip when Andy Hilbert picked off a lazy Michael Nylander pass and moved around Marek Malik and in on Henrik Lundqvist. After deking Lundqvist to the forehand side, his shorthanded bid went off the post before going off the Swedish goalie. In the nick of time, Malik cleared it before another unfortunate bounce hurt his team.

The Rangers would fire 55 shots on DiPietro in regulation to the Islanders’ 27. But they still went to OT. In it, nothing was decided as the clubs played more tenatively unlike the firewagon hockey we saw in which Sean Avery was every bit the pest and drove the Fishsticks crazy. Just for the record, he did everything legally though. After the Blueshirts lost Marcel Hossa to injury at the end of the second, the ex-Hollywood King moved up and played some inspired hockey. He was everywhere. He might not have registered any points but his influence was all over the ice. And though nothing was decided thru 65, ask any Islander about last night compared to the first four wins they had. They had those four easy. Not Monday on Versus.

The shootout hero would be Matt Cullen. He beat DiPietro high inside the bar with a wicked wrist shot. After Lundqvist pokechecked away Viktor Kozlov’s backhand, DiPietro slid across to deny Jaromir Jagr’s forehand deke try leaving the stage for Randy Robitaille to try to extend it. But Lundqvist denied him and got the Rangers the much needed two points they were looking for. And deservingly got in what amounted to their best game all season.

The win vaulted them to 10th with 71 points. Tied with the Leafs, they are ahead due to one more win with each having 16 games left. Now just two behind eighth seeded Carolina and one fewer than stumbling Montreal, the Rangers have gotten themselves right back in the race. With two games at hand on both and key match-ups against each, they now have a more realistic chance of pulling this off.

But before I go crazy, let’s see what transpires Thursday in the anticipated rematch at Nassau Coliseum. At this juncture, it’s one game at a time knowing full well any slip up could prove costly.

For the Fishsticks, they can thank DiPietro for the point which moved them up to 76, within two of sixth place Atlanta. He got the game’s Third Star but in our estimation, should’ve been no worse than Second Star. If you want, give First Star to Cullen since he helped setup the tying goal and got the eventual shootout clincher. Prucha played a whale of a game as did Ortmeyer. But when do those guys never show up? They’re always hustling.

As for Cullen, he has been playing some inspired hockey. Since being moved to the third line which he was more accustomed to last year in Carolina, the American forward has just been a different player. His hustle has been evident during even strength and especially on the penalty killing unit where he’s notched a couple of shorthanded goals and generated other opportunities. He looks more and more like the player the Rangers signed. The work ethic has been splendid and it’s about time No.5 gets some due for turning around his season!

The most exciting aspect of this rivalry is they get to do it all over again Thursday in Long Island.

Now for some more disturbing news which we were witness to courtesy of part of my entry at Hitting Back

While we’re on topic about tonight’s rivalry game. A few drunken fans went too far and spoiled it for themselves. I was witness to a mauling up around Section 423 near the concessions. This travesty was disturbing. But I was also informed that the Islander fan who was involved had one too many and was mouthing off the entire game. When he came together with a couple of Ranger fans, no security was around. But at first, it looked like they would just exchange words and go their separate ways. But the Fishstick fan made some disparaging remarks which incited the incident and led to him receiving some tough blows. Finally security stepped in to break it up and the ugliness ended. Still, this type of stuff should never happen. If you’re an opposing fan and want to root on your team, by all means do so. But don’t act like an obnoxious jerk and make it hard for fans around you. I don’t condone what took place in response. But at the same time, opposing fans have to know where to draw the line. Clearly, this didn’t happen in this particular case tonight.

I hope that I never have to see this kind of stuff happen ever again. People need to remember that this is a sporting event. Not civil war. And with that I’m out.
