Be-Deviled By Lightning

It would be an appropriate title considering how the Bolts took the Devils by storm in periods two and three of their impressive 4-1 win at The Swamp.

After allowing an early first period Scott Gomez power play tally, the Lightning responded with a dominant second period scoring three times at even strength. Vaclav Prospal tied it 44 seconds in and then they got backbreaking goals by Nick Tarnasky and Vincent Lecavalier (league-leading 35th) late in the stanza to take full control.

It didn’t take long for Tampa to put it out of reach in the third. Taking full advantage of a Brian Rafalski hooking minor, Dan Boyle’s point shot beat Martin Brodeur 56 seconds in to make it four unanswered for the Bolts. It would be plenty on a day where they dominated one of the league’s best teams, dealing New Jersey only its fifth regulation defeat on its own home ice and snapping their four-game win streak. For the Devils, it kept them six behind Buffalo for first in the conference.

The win for Tampa gives them 64 points and vaults them over Carolina into the seventh spot in the Eastern playoff race. It makes the Rangers’ visit to Carolina this Thursday even more crucial. They trail the Hurricanes by four points.

A point on WFAN’s Devils’ color analyst Tom Chorske. He is brutal! The first-year analyst is unlistenable. I couldn’t believe the arrogance he showed with the Devils down three, mentioning that “they were in full comeback mode” after Tampa went up three. What game was he watching? The Devils have been resilient this year but even the biggest Devils’ fan could see the writing on the wall. Tampa was much better today. Even with that three-goal cushion, they generated better chances keeping the Devils’ D on its heels. Chorske is just awful. Why did they fire Randy Velischek again? At least he was tolerable. I’ll give Matt Loughlin a pass because I like him and understand how difficult his transition has been from FSNY studio host to play-by-play radio man. Matty L is one of the nicest people in this business.

Fyi…Flames are getting awfully ticked off here at the Red Wings down five. Jarome Iginla has went out of his way to nail some Wings. It might be a heated third.

Congrats

To the NHL Siberia Flyers on finally breaking their franchise worst 13-game home losing streak last night over the Blues in overtime 4-3 at Wachovia Center. Team-leading goalscorer Simon Gagne scored twice including the deciding goal on the power play 27 seconds into OT to finally break the drought. It was their first home victory since defeating ex-coach Ken Hitchcock’s Blue Jackets last November 24.

Team captain Peter Forsberg, who assisted on both Gagne tallies summed it up ending the home futility perfectly. It’s our Quote of The Day:

“I think everybody in the building felt the same way. We have been close so many times. We deserve to win. We played pretty hard. It’s just fun to win a game after losing so many.“

Sabres’ Gaustad Done For Season: After last nite’s 3-2 come from behind shootout triumph, the Eastern Conference leading Buffalo Sabres got some bad news afterwards. It was learned that left wing Paul Gaustaud will miss the rest of the season due to a sliced tendon in his left leg. The freak injury occurred this past Wednesday when his leg collided with Senators’ forward Dany Heatley. At first after having the cut stitched up, tests didn’t reveal serious damage. But additional tests Saturday revealed otherwise finishing his season.

If you think this isn’t a big blow to their playoff chances, you haven’t been following Buffalo much. While Gaustad isn’t a big scorer like Daniel Briere, Chris Drury, Thomas Vanek or Maxim Afinogenov, the second-year forward is a valuable forward who brings high energy to games and can center either the fourth line or play the wing on the third line. To show how much the former North Dakota product has progressed, in 24 less games this season, he already had the same amount of goals (9) and just two fewer points (22) than in his rookie year. Gaustad plays a bruising style utilizing his size (6-5, 222). He also had 74 penalty minutes and a plus-11 rating with three power play goals. The very versatile forward will be sorely missed.

It might force Buffalo to make a move as the February 27 deadline approaches. A Gary Roberts would be a perfect replacement. The veteran brings many of the same intangibles and also knows what it takes to win the Cup. He was a huge part of the 1989 Calgary Flames. Acquiring the current Panther should be on GM Darcy Regier’s priority list as well as looking to get one more defenseman. Especially with the loss of Jaroslav Spacek. The ex-Oiler broke his hand while blocking a shot last night and will miss significant time. He had 20 points (5-15-20) in 53 games. Thinking about it, they really could use Jay McKee about now. Look for Regier to make a move to address this hole.

Two Wins In A Row For Blueshirts

Well, I was out at a buddy’s in Point Pleasant tonight for a hockey get together. And it was nice to see that for the third straight game (yes they played well at the Swamp too), the Rangers no longer resembled a lost team. Taking the body at every turn and winning the key loose puck battles, the revamped Sean Avery Blueshirts dominated in the nation’s capital to pickup their first win there since 2004- coming away with an all important 5-2 victory. The win improved the club to 2-0-1 in their last three and most crucial, it put them at 59 points.

With Tampa idle but playing the Devils later today in a matinee, they pulled within three of the final spot. It should also be noted that Toronto (6-5 shootout loss to Pens) and the Islanders (4-3 SO loss as well) each came away with a point. Meanwhile, the up and down defending Cup champion Hurricanes fell in Minnesota 5-4 and Montreal’s inconsistencies continued in a 5-3 loss to Ottawa, making the standings even more chaotic for the final three spots:

6.Montreal 64
7.Carolina 63
8.Tampa 62
______________
9.Toronto 61
10.Isles 60
11.NYR 59

At this point with about a quarter remaining, it’s going to come down to those head-to-head match-ups. The Rangers play the Islanders four more times. They must do much better than the first portion where they dropped all four. They also go to Carolina next Thursday for a huge game. That will be a big measuring stick. I believe they also have two or three left with Montreal, plus one April home contest against Toronto. The potential four-point swing games will prove pivotal. But more so, it’s about getting as many wins as possible. Remember, if teams finish tied for the final spot, the first tiebreaker is wins. That will loom large.

I didn’t really get much into what I liked from last night’s Ranger win which bolstered them to 27-24-5, injecting some much needed life into their playoff aspiration. I’ll break it down quickly:

1.The lines were again the same because Hollweg wasn’t suspended by the league. They all had good chemistry and Avery drove Olaf Kolzig nuts. Btw…the roughing call on the underappreciated Caps’ goalie resulted in Michal Rozsival’s winning power play tally. Avery has three points in three games and has sparked this club. Goalies no longer have a free ride.

2.Marcel Hossa (goal, assist) continued his inspired play. As suggested a while ago here, he fits in well with Marty Straka and Jaromir Jagr. He is playing very well. The PP redirect and then rebound he put home was stuff that we haven’t seen. The Slovak has now doubled his goal output in the past three games (six for season). It’s no coincidence.

3.Colton Orr and Hollweg hit everything that moved and each had scraps. Orr had a nice rematch with Donald Brashear in which the two exchanged blows and Hollweg stuck up for Henrik Lundqvist. The Swede was run by Brian Sutherby. Then the undersized Hollweg dropped’em and took some shots from Sutherby. But he sent the message. For once, with the energizers doing their job and Avery playing his role perfectly, this team looks together. Amazing what one deal and breaking up that top line can do to boost morale.

4.Outside of two almost identical flukey Caps’ PP goals off the boards, Lundqvist was once again sharp. What’s he played? 19 or 20 straight. Remember all that talk that he couldn’t handle a heavy workload? He’s silencing those critics with much better play. I’m going to try to break it all down. He’s been playing well for a while and deserves some due.

5.The D has also been playing better. It’s no coincidence that since Marek Malik returned to pair with Rozy, they look more in synch. And the two young’uns Fedor Tyutin and Daniel Girardi continue to impress as the third pair. They’re only getting 12-13 minutes but boy are they stepping up. I’ll give Karel Rachunek some credit as he wasn’t bad last night and even made a couple of defensive plays and chipped in with an assist on the improved 2nd power play unit. And Aaron Ward was a beast last night. He was blocking shots and throwing hits. That’s the way he has to play to make an impact.

All in all, I must say I was very impressed with how they responded after that Chris Clark goal. It would’ve been easy to get down and think maybe it’s not their night but instead, Avery had a real good shift and Rozsival ripped home his 2nd PPG to reclaim the lead in a tough place.

This was a big win because now they’re off until Thursday’s showdown in Raleigh. And you know what that means. The teams around them could pick up points. That’s why it was imperative that they get this one so that that gap doesn’t grow to 8-10 points in four days.

Stuart moving to Alberta: While we’re discussing puck, Brad Stuart was moved along with Wayne Primeau to Calgary for Andrew Ference and Chuck Kobasew. Our translation: Salary dump for the B’s. It was little secret that the ex-Shark was going to leave Beantown and probably head back to the West Coast where his most likely destination is rumored to be LA (cue 2PAC’s To Live In Die LA theme now). Okay. Ference is a solid physical D while Kobasew didn’t exactly fulfill expecations in Calgary but is only 24 and returns to an area where he starred for Boston College, helping them win a championship. But here’s the sad aspect for Boston fans if there are any left:

They traded a superstar in rating Hart winner Joe Thornton to San Jose now for Ference, Kobasew and Marco Sturm. Say what??? Somebody please tell me this isn’t true. Wow. That franchise should be disbanded. That is one of the worst deals in NHL history.

One final note for those that might’ve caught the exciting conclusion of the Pens’ thrilling OT win over the Leafs at Air Canada Centre:

Did you see the move Jordan Staal put on that Leaf defenseman before beating Andrew Raycroft to win it with his first career hat trick? That’s now seven goals in the last five for the former 2006 2nd overall selection who is very much looking like a superstar. I said it the other day. There isn’t anything this kid can’t do. If he keeps this up, by the time April hits, it will be linemate Evgeni Malkin edging out him for the Calder. Nothing against Anze Kopitar. He is a super talent. But based on what I’ve seen from Jordan, he’s better. They’re both going to be great players. But this Staal might just be the best one when it’s all said and done.

The kid also got to be interviewed by HNIC’s own Ron MacLean and his biggest supporter Don Cherry. How good can it get?

And now for a scary but true fact:

Pittsburgh has three players 20 or younger with at least 20 goals – Malkin (27), Crosby (25) and Staal (22) – and that hasn’t happened since 1981-82 when Edmonton had Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey.

Jagr Becomes 12th Member To Reach 1500: And finally, congrats to Jaromir Jagr on becoming only the 12th NHLer to reach 1500 points for his brilliant career. With three assists in the Rangers’ 5-2 win over the Caps, No.68 joined the exclusive list. Btw…it was no accident that he had a big game. He played inspired. Kudos to JJ for this impressive feat.

So here’s our trivia. Name the other 11 players on the list. We’ll provide the answer Monday.

Rangers Storm Lightning 5-0

This was about as pleasant a surprise as could be. In a must win regulation game against the eighth seeded Lightning, the Rangers took Tampa Bay to school, slicing the deficit to five. In every aspect, they dominated. It didn’t take long to figure out that this wasn’t the same team which entered winless in their last four. When enforcer Colton Orr flipped a backhand past Johan Holmqvist for his first career NHL goal, you knew immediately that this was a different team. How often is it that your goon scores? It was nice to see. And it came off the hard work of Blair Betts and Ryan Hollweg, who btw had his own big game. More on that in a bit.

This game was why the club went out and got Sean Avery. Instead of using the same old combinations, Tom Renney finally did what I have wanted for two months. He broke up the one-dimensional Jagr unit to balance out his lines. Here’s what an energized MSG saw instead:

Hossa-Straka-Jagr
Avery-Nylander-Shanahan
Ortmeyer-Cullen-Prucha
Hollweg-Betts-Orr

The changes saw instant results as every line had the kind of chemistry needed to get the all important victory. Fyi…the third line never should’ve been broken up in the first place. Able to roll four lines, Renney called on everyone in this one and finally saw the kind of offensive balance his club has severely lacked most of this disappointing campaign.

When the underrated Hossa took a pass in stride from Michal Rozsival, he ripped a shot underneath the crossbar for his fourth. Very deserving for the 26 year-old Slovak who never has dogged it despite the criticism from fans. He has always worked. The goal made it 2-0 after one period.

For much of the past two months, no lead has been safe for this club. So, when they broke up several Lightning chances in the second and got some key stops from a sharp Henrik Lundqvist who made his 20th consecutive start, it was huge. One goal the other way and maybe this one swings. Instead, they took advantage of a poor Tampa change. And here came the “Did You See” Moment as captain Jaromir Jagr flipped a backhand feed across to Hollweg, who buried it for his first of the season as well. It also was his first point. At this point, with Orr and Hollweg tallying plus Hossa getting one, you had to feel pretty good. But also had to think you were seeing things. But this is how it was on one night when everything worked.

After Marc Denis replaced Holmqvist, Tampa enforcer Andre Roy challenged Orr during a shift but the ex-Bruin decided that with his team up three, he would wait. Their time would come later. The icing on the cake came when the newly acquired Avery was setup in the high slot and took a routine wrister which went upstairs with traffic in front. There it was! The much discussed ex-Kings’ first Ranger tally. The crowd which already had given out huge cheers for Orr and Hollweg stood up and went nuts again. It was Avery’s second point in two games. Already, the gritty agitator is making a difference. To all the cynics who despise this guy for his antics. He’s a pretty damn good player. Most of his shifts thus far have been very active. The underrated aspect of his game which never is discussed is his skating. Top notch.

Up four, that’s when Orr obliged and then got the better of Roy in an entertaining scrap which had everyone’s attention. Roy might’ve gotten the takedown but Orr won this one and got a standing ovation.

It was early in the third when Jagr capped the scoring when his wrister off the right wing went thru Denis and just over the goal line before the Tampa netminder covered it up. It went to video review but it confirmed the obvious. That No.68 had tallied for the second straight game. That in itself is good news for the team. If they are to make a run at this thing, they’ll need Jagr to finish more.

The only question was whether Lundqvist would get the shutout. So many times in his two-year career the team has let him down and he’s fallen short. But even after Hollweg’s five-minute kneeing major, the club confidently killed off the remaining time to give the popular Swede his second blanking this season. He stopped all 29.

Regarding the Hollweg major, it was hard to tell if it was the right call. I won’t get to see a replay. But from my vantage point up in 411, I could see when he started skating towards the Tampa player that it had disaster written all over it. The player had the puck and then tried to get out of the way and their knees collided, making the call an easy one for the two officials. That’s how Ryan plays. He is very aggressive and won’t mail in a shift. Unfortunately, he’ll be forced to sit out tomorrow’s contest in D.C. due to being tossed out.

Look for Pascal Dupuis to take his place on that fourth line with Betts and Orr. Dupuis should fit in well considering his skating ability. Expect a rematch between Orr and Brashear. If you recall the last meeting at MSG, it was a Ranger domination in late December which featured tons of goonage.

I think in a game where Orr and Hollweg stepped up their game, they should’ve been the 2nd and 1st Star. Lundqvist was good but he didn’t have to make that many tough saves. It was just nice to see the energizers getting their due after such an inspired effort. And they seemed to eat it up. Why not? It’s been a while since this team showed that kind of form at MSG.

So, is this a mirage what happened tonight? Until we see them repeat it, that’s what we’ll believe. They need to back it up with another solid effort at Washington tomorrow. Btw…they’re no pushovers. They have 54-55 points. And you know Ovechkin and Semin will be ready as will Glen Hanlon’s overachieving bunch. That isn’t an easy place to play.

The Rangers so far are 5-4 in the second game of back-to-backs. They’ll need to make it 6-4 if they want to really make believers out of their supporters.

Aside from that, rookie Daniel Girardi continues to establish himself on the blueline. He teamed with Fedor Tyutin to form a solid pair. Girardi isn’t flashy but wow, it looks like the Rangers have found someone. Just 22, he is really smart in his end and doesn’t make too many glaring mistakes with the puck. Amazing. Marek Malik also returned to the lineup and played a sound game, re-pairing with Rozsival to anchor the blueline. The only pair that scared me was Karel Rachunek with Aaron Ward. Anytime you put Rachunek with anyone, you worry. But Ward played one of his better games and broke up a couple of plays. And Rachunek didn’t do anything stupid for a change.

The Rangers (26-24-5, 57 pts) have 27 games remaining. They must jump over three teams in order to qualify for their second postseason in a row. It’s not going to be easy. Still five back, they have their work cut out. The next four games are all ones they must come with a purpose with:

Feb. 10 Rangers at Washington, 7 p.m.
Feb. 15 Rangers at Carolina, 7 p.m.
Feb. 17 Rangers vs. Philadelphia, 1 p.m.
Feb. 18 Rangers vs. Chicago, 3:30 p.m.

In this league as you already know, there are no nights off. Just ask the Devils and Pens about those lottery bound Flyers. They had to work hard just to come away with victories. The team needs as many points as they can get. All four are winnable. The goal should be to get 7 of 8 points here. If they can manage that, it should help the cause.

As I told host Joe McDonald during this past Wednesday’s show, we’ll know what direction this club is headed in the next 10 days.

Rangers swap Hall for Dupuis

Basically, this is a nothing deal. One support player for another. Adam Hall just never distinguished himself here after coming back from Nashville in the unpopular three-team trade which sent Dominic Moore to playoff-bound Pittsburgh. Pascal Dupuis isn’t a bad player. He is more gritty and has decent speed. A few years ago, he was a big part of the Wild’s run to the Conference Finals before they were swept by Anaheim. But really, what are we talking about here? Nothing that’s going to change the dynamic of the Rangers. They’re still six out and fading fast as everyone else around them picks up two points. And what’s more:

I was going thru the archive from this site and came across a post back in December when believe it or not, this team led the Atlantic with 40 points- one better than the Devils and three more than the Islanders. So, what does that tell you? Since that point, they’ve managed just 15 points and fallen 19 behind New Jersey and trail the Fishsticks by four.

I guess it speaks to how disappointing this season has been.

And with that, here comes another loss tonight to eighth place Tampa which will pretty much finish them off.

Poll Time

Well, if there actually was a way to create one, I can only think of one topic which Steve and Swamp fans don’t want any part of:

Are you concerned that Claude Julien’s overuse of Martin Brodeur might burn him out when the playoffs start this Spring?

A.Yes, he’s 34 going on 35 and might only get 1 or 2 nights off the rest of the season.
B.No, because he’s so experienced that his body is used to the ridiculous heavy workload.
C.Not sure, it could go either way.

I wish there was a way we could get votes on this. The only idea I can think of is for Devil fans to voice their opinion by picking one choice and giving us feedback underneath. We really need a way to make polls such as this part of this place. It would be a way to get more input from other puck fans out there and give us a better idea of where they stand.
