John Buccigross

Bucci’s latest column is a must read for any puck fan. This guy gets it. A small sampling of the SC anchor’s passion coming out:

Crosby is better at what he does than LeBron James is at what he does. That is not hyperbole, that is fact. I’m a better free-throw shooter than LeBron. That should not be the case.

ESPN The Magazine has put Ron Artest on the cover of its magazine this year and not Crosby. Sports Illustrated has put Chad Johnson — CHAD JOHNSON! — on its cover, but can’t seem to find time to chronicle the best story in sports from the past 12 months. You have to wonder if people who cover sports really like sports anymore.

Completely 100 percent smack on!

Crazy Mysterious Lou Strikes Again

Apparently, Devils President/GM Lou Lamoriello decided to kill this Montreal experiment or fetish that he has by firing Claude Julien with a week left in the season. No! You aren’t hallucinating folks. It really happened again. Seven years ago, the mysterious Lou axed Robbie Ftorek and replaced him with assistant Larry Robinson. It resulted in the Devils’ second Stanley Cup.

So, will it work again? We’re not sure. But fact is Julien has guided the club to the top of the Atlantic with 102 points (1 better than Pittsburgh with three left). So they’re in familiar territory. Did he deserve to be replaced by the mad scientist behind the bench? What do you think?!?!?!?!?!

I’m not saying I was a fan of Julien’s hire. As a rival fan, I didn’t think much of his hiring last summer because despite the Montreal pedigree, he wasn’t Jacques Lemaire, Robinson or Pat Burns. That said, he came in and did exactly what the Devils wanted, making them an even stingier defensive club to play against. Maybe it’s like some say. Maybe he was just a prop. Maybe the Devils operate the exact same way Rangers’ President/GM Glen Sather used to be speculated about.

We’ll say this for Julien. He still got his team easily into the playoffs for a 10th consecutive season despite key cogs Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta, Colin White and John Madden missing time. Under his watch, rookie Travis Zajac and super soph Zach Parise blossomed with Jamie Langenbrunner forming the Devils’ most effective line. And if the Devils go anywhere this Spring, it will be because of that line. That can’t be taken away.

Do I think this is a desperate move? It’s in line with that Ftorek axing. Only difference is that team was limping to the finish line and was in need of a shake up.

We’ll find out if Lou pushed the right button soon.

Back from Dead

Just kidding. I had been having some login issues the past few days Steve. Sorry. Also had been completing an in depth baseball preview filled with predictions over at Hitting Back. To view it, either go below our last More HB entry or click on the Articles section. It’s three parts long breaking down both circuits and making our World Series pick as well as award prognostications.

Our last entry coincidentally enough covered a wide range of sports topics over the weekend including the Rangers’ latest victory along with up to date playoff race and remaining schedules for sixth New York, seventh Tampa, eighth Montreal and the teams chasing them.

So what are my thoughts on what the Rangers did last night to put themselves one win away from a second consecutive playoff season? I’ll sum it up quickly:

I’m extremely pleased with what I saw Sunday as opposed to the lackadaisical uneven performance they had in a 6-4 win the previous night in The City of Brotherly Love. Tom Renney’s club came better prepared for a Leafs’ squad which was playing their fourth game in six nights. They also got a monster performance from pest Sean Avery– who finished with a Gordie Howe hat trick and dominated in the club’s 7-2 rout which gave it more distance from ninth Toronto and in good position.

Avery finished with two goals, an assist and an entertaining scrap with the opposite No.16 Darcy Tucker. The former King best known for his mouth and hot Hollywood girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert has been nothing short of sensational since coming over to Broadway. Playing the agitating grinding style, the undersized Avery has proven he is more than just the league’s most hated player. He’s an effective player who has changed the dynamic on what was a soft Ranger club and helped pave the way for this run they’ve been on for the past month.

As brilliant as Henrik Lundqvist has been and as resurgent as team captain Jaromir Jagr has since being severely criticized for sitting out a shootout loss to the Devils, without Avery, there are no postseason aspirations. He has been that good. Remember when many scoffed at his acquisition? Not anymore. Here’s what No.68 had to say after scoring for the third time in two games about the feisty winger:

“I thought the whole team played good, but he was just unbelievable. I think he was the biggest factor in our season lately. Once he came here, he changed everything. We got a great player who can score goals, play rough, play tough. He’s tough to play against.”

About as accurate an assessment of Mr. Avery since he came over from LA back on February 5th for a package of Jason Ward (now playing well for Tampa), prospects Marc-Andre Cliche and Jan Marek.

So the stage is set Tuesday. A Ranger win at bitter rival Long Island and they’re in. But not only that. They can eliminate the Islanders from the playoffs altogether. It will be something to watch.

And now for a parting shot at the Swamp fans who booed Zdeno Chara yesterday. Scrums are a part of the game. The Devils are very good at dishing it out. But whenever their goalie faces the same stuff, their players come to the aid of Martin Brodeur roughing up opponents the same way Chara did to Jamie Langenbrunner. That’s part of the game. Good for Chara. At least he was exhibiting some passion for what’s been a dreadful year for his new team. If more Bruins displayed that kind of intensity, maybe the Original Six club wouldn’t be a laughingstock.

Devils Go two in a row

Winning another 3-1 game. Pando gets two (!) and Gio returns and gets goal #25. Gomer and Janssen sit out. Soreness? Chyea, from riding the pine 55 minutes a night maybe.

Finally, Devils fans have found a guy to resoundly boo every time he’s out on the ice, as they did so to Zdeno Chara. Avery and Chara may be P.E. #’s 1 & 2 at the Meadowlands.

Interesting stuff from Rich Chere. Vanderbeek denying reports that the Devs will go to the Meadowlands if The Rock is not ready. He says, again and again, that it will be.

Sure hope so.

Basically, the Rangers have 3 teams’ playoff hopes in their hands tonight. If Toronto wins tonight, for all intents and purposes, that is IT for the Hurricanes, Islanders and Panthers.

Florida leads Carolina 3-1. Both teams would have 84PTS and 3 to go were that to remain. Plus 1 more meeting.

Isles with 4 to go and 84 PTS. A Maple Leaf loss would give hope. And right now, that’s all they can have. Reasonably, they’d have to win all 4 games, hope the Canadiens lose to the Bruins and Rangers this week, hope the Leafs lose to the Rags and Flyers. Then they’d have to beat the Leafs on Thursday. Then they’d have to continue to win, and hope they get a 2-pt win from the victor of the Leafs-Habs on Saturday night.

Basically, the Isles have to win out and hope the Canadiens 4 PTS in their 3 final games, and hope the Leafs can’t muster 5 in their last 4. When realistically, one of them will at-least get two head-to-head.

Good luck.

Rags-Leafs tonight at 7 on MSG and inHD.

We reach Day 5 of the Nobody Posts but Steve-a-thon.

Devils Win; Isles Lose

The Devils, after both teams played dreadfully, got a 3-1 win over Filthy. Rupp, Zajac and Pando (!) scored for NJ to put them back in first on wins in the Atlantic. Pittsburgh is in T.O. on Saturday, the Devils are home to Boston on Sunday.

The Isles on the other hand, let a chance to overtake 8th place slip away. They blew it. AGAIN! Why does this team keep going with Mike Dunham? It clearly just isn’t working for Marty Brodeur’s former understudy. Dubliewicz comes in and stops 17 of 18 while Miller lets in 3rd period goals. Please, oh please, Teddy boy, let Doobie start on Saturday. The Isles have Ottawa at the Mausoleum on HNIC.

Buffalo, with their next win, will clinch top seed in the East.

Ottawa beat Montreal tonight, keeping the Isles two points out.

In rearview mirror news, FLORIDA WON AGAIN. 3-2 over the Caps. They have to be taken seriously this last week of the season. I sincerely believe they have a shot, merely because their remaining schedule is Carolina twice, and Tampa and DC on the road. They will have a prayer when Sunday brings on the Canes in Sunrise.

Tampa moved into 6th with their win over the Canes.

Here’s how 2-13 look, sheesh.

2. NJ – 100 PTS, 4 Games Left
3. ATL – 91 PTS, 4 Games Left
4. PIT – 100 PTS, 4 Games Left
5. OTT – 100 PTS, 4 Games Left
6. TB – 88 PTS, 4 Games Left
7. NYR – 87 PTS, 5 Games Left
8. MTL – 86 PTS, 4 Games Left
———————————
9. TOR – 85 PTS, 5 Games Left
10. NYI – 84 PTS, 5 Games Left
11. CAR – 84 PTS, 4 Games Left
12. FLA – 82 PTS, 4 Games Left

Entertaining Read

Here’s my column from SFM this week.

Super-zoomed in cameras are not the answer to the NHL’s television problem. Just because we’re getting closer to the ice with the angle does not give you a better view of the game, it worsens it. Watching New Jersey-Florida from Sunrise on Saturday, you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. Grinding along the boards was a mystery, a few goals were out of sight. Tell you what: Put the camera wherever you want, use the crowd noise at the games (especially this time of year) to put the casual fan in the arena. Putting the camera in the 10th row and zooming in is not the solution.

Enjoy It

Devils Lose

Well, there goes the conference. We gotta play better. You chalk as many games up to being tired as you want, but at some point your just gonna have to fight through it.

Great goals from Buffalo. They played fantastic. 2-2 season series for these teams. I hope they meet in the Conference Finals.
